John Wheeler Church, Jr. was born in 1932 in Painesville, Ohio. His father was a chemical engineer. He grew-up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania. Church took his bachelor's degree in economics at Bowdoin College and his M.B.A. at Northwestern University (1967). After Bowdoin he served in the army. Then he did investment research on Wall Street for six years, after which he moved to Girard Bank in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania.
